Job Title: Senior/Principal Freshwater Ecologist / Hydro-Ecologist
Location: Galway, Ireland (May also consider Dublin, Cork or Dundalk)
We are seeking an experienced Senior/Principal Freshwater Ecologist / Hydro-Ecologist to join a leading environmental consultancy.
This role offers the opportunity to work on a range of water-related projects, addressing key water use and management issues across Ireland.
About the Role:
You will lead freshwater ecology assessments, applying your expertise in hydrology and water quality. Your work will focus on achieving Water Framework Directive (WFD) objectives for "good status" by 2027,
addressing the impacts of agricultural runoff, wastewater treatment, abstractions, discharges, and impoundments on freshwater systems. Experience with ecological data manipulation, statistical analysis, or modelling is ideal.
Knowledge of Q and SSRS scoring systems, along with riverine diatoms, algae, macrophytes, and fisheries (especially salmonids), will be advantageous.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead freshwater ecological assessments and develop solutions to meet WFD objectives.
- Perform data analysis, statistical modelling, and ecological assessments.
- Address key ecological issues affecting freshwater systems.
- Support business development, proposal writing, and client engagement.
- Collaborate with project teams and senior managers, delivering reports and presentations.
Required Skills/Experience:
- A Degree (Level 8/9) in ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
- Experience in freshwater ecology, hydro-ecology, and water quality management.
- Proficiency in tools like Q and SSRS scoring systems.
- Knowledge of riverine diatoms, algae, macrophytes, and fisheries (particularly salmonids) is a plus.
- Chartered Scientist, Environmentalist, or Ecologist designation preferred.
- Full Irish / EU driving licence required.
